Record-breaking heat across the US has stoked fears of the growing impact of global warming, from out-of-control forest fires to super-sized thunderstorms. Add to the list of concerns lower agricultural production. In California’s Central Valley, five consecutive days of 100-plus degree weather have resulted in cows making less milk, fruit baking on the treetops, and vines and plants ceasing production. “Trees and plants just seem to shut down when it gets this hot,” Kevin Day, of the University of California, told The Fresno Bee. “And the fruit just doesn’t ripen.”
